Live animal exports are ‘horrific’, UNSW expert

UNSW

UNSW’s Dr Siobhan O’Sullivan says the suffering associated with live animal exports has been a hot button political issue in Australia for at least the last 10 years.

“In 2011, the horrific conditions associated with live animal exports was brought to the public’s attention,” says Dr O’Sullivan, a lecturer from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

“Today we will learn whether the Gillard government was right to temporarily suspend the trade.”

The Federal Court will today rule whether or not it was lawful for the Australian government to ban live animal exports to Indonesia in 2011, following a class action led by farmers and businesses affected by the suspension.

Dr O’Sullivan is an expert in animal welfare and she also runs a regular podcast called Knowing Animals.
