Liverpool City Council has elected Councillor Sam Karnib as Deputy Mayor, continuing a family legacy of public service established by his late father, former Councillor and Deputy Mayor Ali Karnib.
Mayor Ned Mannoun congratulated Councillor Karnib on his election, describing it as a significant moment for the Karnib family and the Liverpool community.
“I congratulate newly elected Deputy Mayor and look forward to working with him to keep serving the residents of Liverpool,” he said.
The late Councillor Ali Karnib dedicated more than two decades to serving the people of Liverpool, earning respect for his commitment to education, multicultural harmony and creating opportunities for residents from all backgrounds. He served as Deputy Mayor on three occasions and was a passionate advocate for a fairer, more inclusive community.
His contribution to Liverpool was built on a belief that everyone deserved the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background, and that strong communities were built by bringing people together. In 2026, his service was further recognised through his inclusion on the NSW Multicultural Honour Roll.
Councillor Sam Karnib, who was elected to Council in 2024, spoke of the pride he feels following his father into public life and continuing to serve the city his family has long called home.
“I am honoured to have been elected Deputy Mayor and to have the opportunity to serve the people of Liverpool in the same way my father did,” Councillor Karnib said.
“My father dedicated so much of his life to this community. He believed in education, opportunity and bringing people together, and he worked hard to make Liverpool a better place for everyone.
