Liverpool residents have overwhelmingly backed the transformation of their city centre into Sydney’s third CBD, painting their own futuristic vision for the key economic and social engine room of Sydney.
As Liverpool prepares to embrace the future Western Sydney International Airport and its Aerotropolis, there is also support among locals for the need to have jobs close to home; quality public transport to the future airport; and immigration as a key ingredient for future success.
These are the key findings from a Liverpool City Council survey.
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller is encouraged by the results of the survey and said Council would continue to support the community so their city reaches its full potential.
“We have a diverse, educated, aspirational, welcoming population,” Mayor Waller said.
“I always say we are a city with a heart and a history and I believe the survey responses support this. The people of Liverpool also want to make sure that as we plan for the future we are thinking about opportunities for our community and our city.”
Liverpool doctor Abeer Khan embodies many of the findings of the survey.
The recent medical graduate from the South West Sydney Clinical School (UNSW) has just been offered a job at Liverpool Hospital, commencing his internship there.
“I’m a local boy, I went to Liverpool Public School and I’ve virtually spent my whole life in this area,” he said.
“I feel lucky that I have been able to pursue a quality education near where I live and now I have a great job with Liverpool Hospital.
“There are many employment opportunities in Liverpool for me with the hospital about to undergo a $740 million renovation.”
The headline survey results:
Sydney’s Third CBD
- 93 per cent said they want Liverpool’s CBD to continue to provide more opportunities for residents and to become Sydney’s third CBD;
- 94 per cent said Liverpool should be a leader in health;
- 95 per cent said Liverpool should be a leader in education; and
- 89 per cent said Liverpool should be a leader in innovation.
Western Sydney International Airport and Aerotropolis
- 95 per cent say there should be public transport to the new airport from Liverpool; and
- 91 per cent would use public transport if it took 30 minutes or less to get to the airport.
Immigration and international visitors
- 83 per cent believe Liverpool is a welcoming place for immigrants;
- 86 per cent said international visitors arriving at the new airport will boost the local economy; and
- 75 per cent believe immigration is a positive contributor to Liverpool’s economy.
Other results
- 90 per cent want fast train services to Parramatta and Sydney CBDs; and
94 per cent said protection of the local environment was important.
