Liverpool to celebrate 209th birthday in November

25 October 2019

Liverpool is turning 209 on 7 November 2019 and to mark the occasion, Liverpool City Council will host a special ceremony to welcome new citizens, present locals with Order of Liverpool Awards and cut a celebratory cake.

“We will come together as a community to recognise how far our city has come over the last 209 years,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.

“Liverpool is a city we can all be proud of, as it is built on diversity.

“The combined contributions of our traditional Aboriginal custodians and those who have come from all around the world is what makes Liverpool such a special place to live, work and learn.”

Each year Council recognises the achievements of local people and the contributions they have made to enhance the quality of life within our city, in a voluntary capacity, with an Order of Liverpool Award.

There are three categories: the Companion of the Order of Liverpool is the most prestigious of the awards, followed by the Officer of the Order of Liverpool and the Member of the Order of Liverpool.

“So many people who live and work in our city go above and beyond to support others in need,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.

“One of last year’s recipients, Colleen Thorne, has provided foster care to more than 280 children; she has lived in Liverpool for 20 years and has been an active member of the Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council.

“Like Colleen, there are thousands of people living and working in Liverpool who go above and beyond to support others in need.

“I look forward to recognising their accomplishments and encourage members of our community to join Councillors and me at our special birthday celebration.”

The Order of Liverpool Awards were created in 1979 by former Mayor of Liverpool Noel Short.

Liverpool’s 209th birthday ceremony will be held at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre from 10am to 12pm on Thursday 7 November.

As spaces are limited, community members are requested to register their interest in attending this event by Monday 1 November to Alyson Infanti on
