Local Government sector urged to take leadership role

  • Local government urged to take leadership role during Phase 2 easing of restrictions
  • Re-opening of libraries and other facilities within health requirements
  • Call for flexibility and common sense approach to alfresco dining
  • The local government sector has a key role to play in the Phase 2 easing of restrictions and in helping communities get back on their feet and the economy back on track.

Local Government Minister David Templeman today wrote to all Mayors, Shire Presidents and Commissioners across the sector and thanked them for their work to date in dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.

Mr Templeman urged the sector to focus on a number of initiatives over the coming week, including:

    • Re-opening libraries and other local government facilities that comply with the new requirements
    • Helping the restaurant and hospitality sector by being as flexible as possible in letting businesses open up again, particularly regarding alfresco operations
    • Moving back to conducting council and shire chamber meetings in person – while observing social distancing at all times – and with the public attending where possible
    • Promoting the new regional travel guidelines
    • Re-opening sport and recreation facilities where practicable

As stated by Local Government Minister David Templeman:

“The hard work in dealing with COVID-19 has just begun and it is imperative that local governments take on a leadership role over the coming weeks and months.

“The sector has already done an enormous amount of good work to help communities and businesses during the first phase but now, as we start to come out the other end, we need local governments to reopen sport and community recreation centres and other facilities where it is safe and practicable to do so.

“I also urge local governments to support sporting groups with practical measures such as turning on the lights at ovals and outdoor sporting facilities at night.

“In particular, I would like to see all libraries open in line with the health requirements. Libraries are extremely important community assets and play an important role in education, skills development and social cohesion.

“I also urge the sector to take a flexible and common sense approach to the restaurant and hospitality sector, particularly regarding alfresco operations.”
