Local places and spaces on budget agenda for Division 8

Supporting residents and the local economy is the focus of Sunshine Coast Council’s 2020/21 budget allocation for Division 8.

Budget highlights for Division 8 include a $1 million investment on roads and pathways, a commitment of more than $800,000 towards community, sport and tourism facilities, $505,000 to continue implementation of the Maroochy River Foreshore upgrade and more than $260,000 to be invested in parks and playgrounds.

Divisional Councillor Jason O’Pray said council’s $782 million budget included a mix of projects that would keep our growing number of community facilities in good nick.

“On our road to economic recovery, it is important to keep our tourism assets in top condition, and I have no doubt that the $600,000 upgrade project for Mudjimba Holiday Park will encourage the wider domestic market of tourists to keep coming back for more of our Sunshine,” Cr O’Pray said.

“Ensuring our community facilities are safe is one of council’s top priorities, so there are lots of projects including barbecue, shelter and public seating improvements, bollard replacements and playground equipment upgrades planned for Yaroomba, Twin Waters, Mt Coolum, Maroochydore and Marcoola in the coming financial year.

“The Millwell Road Community Centre will receive a $40,000 upgrade to the kitchen and amenities area.

“With our growing community we will start looking at the space around this centre becoming a district community and cultural venue with $120,000 set aside to plan the future of this important community asset.

“Providing dedicated infrastructure for communities to gather contributes to our healthy, smart, creative vision for the region.

“With sport a huge part of the Sunshine Coast lifestyle, I’m also very pleased to see a commitment of $45,000 towards a regional football (soccer) facility in Maroochydore.

“Council has allocated $50,000 towards a new transport link to connect Primary School Court to Pikki Street in Maroochydore.

“I am also pleased to report that an additional $100,000 allocation was made to council’s operational canal dredging program that will maintain current service levels for a number of canals cross the region including Maroochy Waters.”
