Long drive for healthier smile

In a remarkable display of determination and resilience, Warrawa man Uncle Clyde Russ undertook a challenging 376km journey to see an Air Force dentist in Derby, WA.

This extraordinary trek highlights the disparities in healthcare access facing many Indigenous communities and serves as a reminder of the importance of Exercise Kummundoo.

Uncle Clyde, from Gibb River Station, drove across the famously challenging Gibb River Road to see the Air Force dentist during the exercise.

At 72, he had seen a lot of dentists, but he hated dental check-ups.

Access to essential services, including dental care, remains a challenge for people living in remote areas, and the disparity in healthcare opportunities often results in enduring suffering for those without access.

In a world where healthcare can be taken for granted, this amazing journey reminds us of the sacrifices some individuals must make in the pursuit of something as fundamental as good dental health.

“It’s my least favourite thing, seeing the dentist. I think that is why I let my teeth get bad,” Uncle Clyde said.

“You know, I put off going to the dentist, and then they get worse, and then I put off going.

“I really love the [Air Force] dental team at the Derby Aboriginal Health Service.

“They help me feel at ease, and have done the procedures so they don’t hurt at all. I have told other people that they should definitely come and see the Air Force dental team.”

The exercise is delivered through a memorandum of understanding with the National Aboriginal Controlled Community Health Organisation and delivers dental care and oral health training in remote Indigenous communities.

Sergeant Deborah Williamson, a senior dental assistant, travelled to Derby from Tindal for Exercise Kummundoo and said the exercise was a very moving experience.

“It has warmed my heart to be able to help people like Uncle Clyde,” Sergeant Williamson said.

“His sheer determination in travelling so far to see us is inspirational.

“A real highlight for me has been giving oral-health training and advice in the schools and aged-care facility.

“Giving people the knowledge to maintain their own oral health has been a sincerely rewarding experience. This will be the real legacy of Kummundoo.”
