Abai, the adorable 9-month-old joey, is one lucky koala. Abai’s story begins on Crescent Head Road, where, sadly, she and her mother were struck by a vehicle recently.
Unfortunately, Abai’s mother did not survive the incident. However, the quick thinking of a caring resident gave Abai a second chance at life.
Currently, Abai is in the process of settling into home care with dedicated caregivers. She’s receiving a special diet, a combination of Biolac 200 and fresh eucalyptus leaves.
Given her young age and small size, Abai weighs just 1.4 kilograms and will continue to receive nurturing care at home until she reaches a weight of 2.5 kilograms.
She will then move to the Koala Hospital, where she will acquire the essential skills needed for her eventual release back into the wild, which is expected when she reaches a weight range of 3.5 to 4 kilograms.
Koala breeding season runs from August through February each year, and you’ll notice koalas are more active and may frequently cross roads or venture into our towns.
Pay extra attention to the roads, especially during dusk and dawn, when koalas are most active. Slow down and drive carefully, especially at night, to avoid any unfortunate accidents.
By taking these simple precautions and remaining watchful, we can contribute to the safety and happiness of our cherished koalas in the beautiful Macleay Valley.
