Cars impounded after excessive speed intercepts during Operation Furlong over cup weekend

Fawkner Highway Patrol members have impounded two luxury SUVs during Operation Furlong road policing patrols in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A 31-year-old Kalkallo man was detected driving at an alleged speed of 158kph in a 60kph zone on Aitken Boulevard in Craigieburn about 12.30am.

The man’s one week old Land Rover Defender was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1150.10.

He was issued with an infringement notice with a penalty of $1046.00 and immediate licence suspension for 12 months.

A 20-year-old Roxburgh Park man was later detected driving at an alleged speed of 154kph in an 80kph zone on Citylink in Essendon Fields about 3.25am and further detected driving at an alleged 162kph in an 80 kph zone a short time later on the Pascoe Vale Road exit of the Western Ring Road.

It’s alleged the man, who was also found to be a disqualified driver, was intercepted and returned a positive evidentiary breath test of 0.073.

The car he was driving at the time of the incident, a Mercedes Benz SUV, was impounded for a period of 30 days at a cost of $999.52.

He is expected to be charged on summons to appear at the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court at a later date.

Fawkner Highway Patrol’s Senior Sergeant Mark Abela said,

“There is simply no excuse for driving at these speeds on Victorian roads”.

“A split-second mistake at more than 150km/h can have catastrophic consequences, not only for the driver, but for passengers, other motorists, and innocent road users”.

“Speed limits are set for a reason and choosing to ignore them is a deliberate decision that puts lives at risk”.

“These drivers are fortunate they were intercepted by police before tragedy occurred and is testament to the dedication of all Highway Patrol members in the state sending a strong message about road safety”.

Operation Furlong commenced at 12.01am on Friday 30 October for the duration of the Melbourne Cup weekend and concludes at 11.59pm on Wednesday 4th November.
