Man dies at Waitpinga, South Australia

Police are preparing a report for the Coroner after the tragic death of a man at Waitpinga Beach today.

Emergency services rushed to Waitpinga after receiving reports of two women experiencing difficulty in the water about 5.10pm on Saturday 15 January.

A male relative and other witnesses immediately went to their aid, but the man also got into trouble and required assistance.

The man was pulled from the water and the rescue helicopter attended the scene.

Sadly, despite the efforts of members of the public, police and paramedics, the 71-year-old man from the western suburbs was pronounced deceased on the beach.

The two women were taken to South Coast Hospital as a precaution.

Victor Harbor police and detectives are speaking to witnesses and preparing a report for the Coroner.

Local police sincerely thank several members of the public who assisted in the water rescues and provided first aid and CPR on the beach until they were relieved by police officers and then paramedics.

The public are urged to take extra care in the water and swim to the conditions and within their ability, particularly when swimming at remote and unsupervised beaches.
