Man dies in hospital; investigations continue into brawl at Ballina, NSW

A man has died in hospital as investigations continue into a brawl in northern NSW last weekend.

Just before 8pm on Sunday (22 December 2019), police and emergency services responded to reports of a brawl near Hill and Park Streets, East Ballina.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a 24-year-old man suffering serious head injuries before he was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital.

Officers from Richmond Police District established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic officers.

Initial inquiries revealed the man had been at a local pub with friends, and became involved in an altercation after leaving, during which he was assaulted and fell to the ground; knocking him unconscious.

Investigators have been notified the man died in hospital about 2.30pm yesterday (Thursday 26 December 2019).

Detectives from Richmond Police District continue to conduct an investigation into the incident under Strike Force Tancred.
