Police are reminding the community of the dangers around rail tracks after a man was located deceased in a rail yard in Burnie this morning.
“Around 5.10am this morning, police received advice from TasRail that a man had been located deceased in a rail yard near Marine Terrace at Burnie,” said Inspector Steve Jones.
“Police attended and located a 36-year-old man deceased within a restricted area at the rail yard.
“Investigations so far have determined the man had climbed fencing to gain access to the prohibited area of the yard and was struck by a train carriage as freight was being unloaded.”
Police have spoken to the driver of the train who was unaware that the incident had occurred. The driver, and other staff members on site at the time, are being provided support from TasRail.
“Police are aware the man who sadly died was recently itinerant and was in possession of a black suitcase in and around the Burnie area. If anyone locates this case, they are asked to please phone police on 131 444.”
“I urge everyone to please be aware of the dangers around rail tracks. Please never enter onto any active rail tracks, especially if a train is in operation,” said Inspector Jones.
