Maseru, Lesotho – UNITAR’s international training centre in South Africa (CIFAL Durban) in collaboration with the eThekwini Municipal Academy (EMA), and the Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE) kick-off a series of training workshops scheduled to take place in Lesotho, South Africa, Eswatini, and Namibia.
On 23 November 2023, the inaugural workshop takes place in Maseru, bringing together 100 government officials and law enforcement officers from the Road Safety Department of Lesotho, and other entities responsible for road safety.
The training workshop aims to contribute to strengthen national capacity for developing local strategies to improve existing road infrastructure and law enforcement for the benefit of all road users.
Participants will be trained on the use of the Toolkit “Management Practices for Safer Roads” to equip them to achieve the following objectives:
- Identify and understand the main issues, trends, and challenges in road safety worldwide and in Lesotho
- Outline the key global frameworks and targets related to road safety and recognize road safety as an urgent priority.
- Introduce the principles and benefices of the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) problem solving methodology for addressing road safety.
- Provide practical examples for the implementation of the Management Practices for Safer Roads Toolkit in cities to reduce road traffic crashing in hazardous locations.
This workshop takes place in the framework and in support of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR) 2023 that aims to remember all people killed and seriously injured on the roads. This year, the WDoR puts the spotlight on JUSTICE.
“Traffic law enforcement, thorough investigation after a crash to find out if a crime was committed and to prevent recurrence, criminal prosecution where appropriate and civil compensation are all part of the justice system. When carried out seriously, fairly and consistently, such a system is what road crash victims who have been injured or had a family member killed as the result of someone’s law-breaking or negligence deserve and wish for, since it also represents a main factor of prevention and this would mean that lessons are learnt from their tragedies so that they may not be repeated”.
