Marilyn Gugliucci recognized for advancing the work of hospice

Marilyn R. Gugliucci, Ph.D., professor and director of Geriatrics Education and Research in UNE’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, recently accepted the Katherine Pope Leadership Award from Hospice of Southern Maine.

Katherine Pope, M.D., a founding member of Hospice of Southern Maine, presented the award to Gugliucci at the agency’s annual meeting. The presentation was featured in the Portland Press Herald.

Four years ago, Gugliucci established an immersion program to give second-year medical students an opportunity to witness all aspects of hospice care. The students spend 48 hours immersed in the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. Pope called Gugliucci’s work “inspirational.”

UNE’s College of Osteopathic Medicine is one of few schools in the nation that requires students to undergo significant training in aging and end-of-life issues.
