How many people still make New Year’s resolutions and do they last?

Google suggests that many New Year’s resolutions are those we mostly hear about – save more, lose weight, exercise frequently and drink less alcohol.

Within that list, one stood out “live life to the fullest” – wise words indeed after two very challenging years and with continuing Covid uncertainties around.

I want to propose to this worthy resolution we add one word so we “live community life to the fullest.” The strength of our community which we all value and enjoy, depends on what we contribute to it. Someone once said to me communities are like a jug of water – they pour out and refresh and invigorate, but if not replenished, empty out.

We replenish our community by our volunteer commitment, but through volunteering we also achieve great satisfaction and have real fun. We have so many organisations focussed on a positive agenda with a passion and excitement for making something good happen. Quite simply there is some for everyone and if you need help to connect, our Volunteer Resource Centre can assist or chat to your Ward Councillor.

Don’t waste your time joining with people who just want to criticise. There is neither fun nor added value in that. Also avoid the few who talk the place down and say other places are better. As someone wisely said “too many people think the grass is greener somewhere else, but the grass is green where you water it.”
