Mayoral election to be held next week

The Greater Geelong Council will hold a special council meeting on Friday 17 June 2022 to conduct a mayoral election, following Mayor Stephanie Asher’s decision to step down from the role.

All councillors are eligible for nomination, with the mayor to be elected in the City Hall council chamber.

The new mayor will serve through to the next required mayoral election, scheduled for November 2022.

The community is welcome to attend this open council meeting from 7pm or live stream.

Background

All Victorian councils, except Melbourne City Council, elect their mayor and deputy mayor by a council group vote. This is a direction of the Victorian Government under the Local Government Act 2020.

The City of Greater Geelong returned to this system in 2017, following recommendations from the Citizen’s Jury.
