Mayoral Statement: COVID-19 SA lockdown

Following the State Government announcement today that South Australia is in full lockdown from midnight tonight for the next six days as a result of an outbreak of COVID-19 in Adelaide, I ask that our residents do not panic.

Whilst this seems an extreme course of action for Mount Gambier, I fully support the State Government’s decision which is implemented with an abundance of caution to protect our community.

We have been asked to stay at home, with one person per household allowed out once per day for the purpose of medical, food and essentials only.

Exercise can only be in your own home and it is essential to wear a mask or face covering outside your home and I ask that you respect these restrictions.

Importantly, if you are exhibiting the slightest symptoms associated with COVID-19 please get tested immediately.

We have been told this strain is extremely contagious and therefore personal hygiene and social distancing is paramount.

I know six days may seem a long time, but this is an important measure to take now to stop the spread of the virus and to keep our community safe.

I know this will disappoint the children in our community, but unfortunately due to these restrictions Santa will not be able to visit Mount Gambier this weekend as part of the Santa’s Boulevard event, but we will re-schedule his appearance as soon as it is safe for him to do so.

In the meantime, please stay calm, stay safe, and take care of each other. I cannot stress enough the importance of following the directions provided by SA Health and the government as we work together through these unpredictable times.

Please keep informed about the latest COVID-19 updates and directives at https://www.covid-19.sa.gov.au/
