Recreational fishers and visitors to Carnarvon will soon be able to enjoy a unique and easily accessible fishing experience close to shore, with the construction of a new artificial reef.
The project has received $300,000 in funding from the McGowan Government through the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund.
The location of the nearshore reef will be determined through consultation with the recreational fishing sector, with a requirement that the reef be accessible for families using small boats.
The public consultation and tender process for the design and construction of the Carnarvon reef will be will commence in mid-2020, in consultation with Recfishwest.
The Carnarvon reef will be the eighth purpose-built artificial reef in Western Australian waters, with reefs already in place at Bunbury, Dunsborough, Rottnest Island, Mandurah, Exmouth, Esperance and another coming in 2020 to the metropolitan area.
A successful tender was recently awarded to Subcon for the metropolitan artificial reef, which is expected to be deployed off Ocean Reef in the first half of next year.
As stated by Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly:
“The Carnarvon reef project is a great example of how the McGowan Government is investing fishing licence fees back into a project to benefit the community.
“This project has strong community support and will provide a new, enjoyable and safe fishing activity, and add to the diverse array of fishing experiences on offer around Carnarvon.
“Artificial reefs not only provide great fishing opportunities, but also support local businesses and regional jobs by attracting more visitors to the area and increasing participation in recreational fishing.”
As stated by Mining and Pastoral Region MLC Kyle McGinn:
“This is a great initiative and will be a huge asset to the Carnarvon community.
“I have seen an artificial reef work extremely well in Exmouth and make a positive contribution to both locals and tourists.
“I would encourage local recreational fishers to contribute to the public consultation process to ensure the reef design is perfect for Carnarvon’s needs.”
