MCIU investigate Maribyrnong collision

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are investigating a two-car collision in Maribyrnong last night.

Emergency services were called after a white Toyota sedan collided with a BMW sedan on Birdwood Street, near the intersection of Merlyn Street, about 6.05pm.

A marked police vehicle observed the oncoming Toyota overtaking a tram on the wrong side of Gordon Street shortly before the collision.

The collision occurred before the police unit was able to attempt to intercept the Toyota.

The driver of the Toyota, a 26-year-old Flemington man, was taken to hospital under police guard with serious injuries.

A 24-year-old Flemington man who was a passenger in the Toyota was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A third man from the Toyota fled the scene on foot and was believed to be carrying a knife.

He was last seen on Mitchell Street and is described as African in appearance, was wearing a red baseball cap and dark-coloured clothing.
