A 23-year-old Melbourne man was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of seven years and six months, after facing court today (Thursday 21 May, 2020) over his role in the preparation and planning of a terrorist act in the Melbourne CBD ahead of the 2017/18 New Year’s Eve celebrations.
The Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT), comprising of members from the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Victoria Police (VICPOL) and Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) charged the man on 28 November 2017, as part of Operation SAN JOSE. The JCCT was also supported by other specialist staff from Victoria Police Counter Terrorism Command.
Today’s result is another example of the effectiveness and cooperation between agencies within the Victorian JCTT. The national JCTT model continues to ensure the safety of the community through partnerships that identify, investigate and disrupt criminal behaviour.
