Meningococcal case 10 February 2022

A case of invasive meningococcal disease has been notified in an 48-year-old woman from metropolitan Adelaide. She has been admitted to hospital and is in a critical condition.

The strain has been identified as serotype B.

Multiple people who had close contact with the patient have been identified, and nine people have been directed to receive clearance antibiotics.

Meningococcal health information is being distributed to other contacts in accordance with the Invasive MeningococcalDisease Communicable Diseases Network Australia: NationalGuidelines for Public Health Units.

There have been two cases of invasive meningococcal disease reported in SA this year, compared to no cases at the same time last year. Both cases reported this year have been serogroup B.

A total of 12 cases were reported in 2021. Of the 12 cases, six were serogroup B and six were serogroup W.
