Meningococcal case November 2021

A case of invasive meningococcal disease has been notified in a 44-year-old male from metropolitan Adelaide. The patient has been admitted to hospital and is in a critical condition.

The strain has been identified as serogroup B.

Multiple people who had close contact with the case have been identified, and nine people have been directed to receive clearance antibiotics.

Meningococcal health information is being distributed to other contacts in accordance with the Invasive Meningococcal Disease Communicable Diseases Network Australia: National Guidelines for Public Health Units.

This is the tenth case of invasive meningococcal disease reported in South Australia this year, compared to five cases recorded at the same time last year. Of the ten cases, five were serogroup W and five were serogroup B.

A total of five cases were reported in 2020. Of the five cases, three were serogroup B and two were serogroup Y.
