More than $4,300 in donations collected during Council’s two most recent free green waste disposal periods will support people who have experienced mental illness.
Cairns Mayor Bob Manning today presented $4,360.20 in donations to The Junction Clubhouse.
“We are very pleased to be able to make this donation on behalf of residents to this important community service,” Cr Manning said.
“The Junction Clubhouse provides a vital service to a great many people in our community who have experienced mental illness.
“It provides a safe place for people to meet, gives them a sense of belonging, and importantly helps in their recovery.”
The Junction Clubhouse NDIS Manager, Greg Curtis-Hill, described the organisation as “a community of people living with mental illness who support each other in our recovery goals”.
“The Junction is a safe, non-clinical environment that encourages people to improve their quality of life,” he said.
“We offer opportunities for friendship, employment, education and purposeful work while understanding that each person has individual needs and goals that may need a variety of supports at different times.”
Voluntary donations were collected at the gate of each of Cairns Regional Council’s waste transfer stations during the free green waste drop-off from 20-28 February and 22-30 May.
“The green waste donation has come at the perfect time as we are keen to get our storage unit into the yard and increase our gardening and bike repair programs into our new sea container,” Mr Curtis-Hill.
. This will give our members purposeful activities as our gardens supply produce for our daily hot meal and our bike program repairs bikes for our members to help them stay mobile, fit and healthy.
The generosity of the community has meant we could get the whole project finished! We sincerely appreciate the support as we continue to support the mental health of the Cairns Community.
Portsmith transfer station topped the donation tally with $624.45 dropped into the tin. Gordonvale produced the highest rate of donations per person with $0.67 donated per vehicle.
