Message for Indian Independence Day 2022

Department of Home Affairs

My warmest regards to the many members of the Indian Australian community who are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Independence of India.

As the world’s largest democracy marks this occasion, I am struck by the close friendship and spirit of cooperation between our two nations and the long history of significant contributions that people of Indian origin have made to Australia’s success as a nation.

The 2021 Census shows India is now the third largest country of birth for Australian residents indicating our friendships and connections are growing. We are immensely proud to have over 975,000 people with Indian ancestry who choose to make Australia their home, whether it be for study, work or as a place to build their future. Indian culture, customs and cuisines are celebrated elements of Australian life.

Indian Australians add to the rich tapestry that is modern multicultural Australia. We all benefit from the diversity in our community and the contribution that the Indian Australian community has made to building modern Australia.

Australia’s diversity is a national strength. Our success as a cohesive and vibrant democracy is built on shared values, through which we enjoy the freedom to express ourselves, respect one another, and rally to support each other in times of need.

I send my best wishes to you all as you celebrate Indian Independence Day.
