Message from our Lifeguards – Wollongong

Dear residents and visitors to Wollongong,

We want everyone to have a happy and safe summer. That’s why we’re asking for your help to ensure a fun visit to the beach does not turn into a tragedy.

While you’re getting ready to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve… we’re getting ready to raise the red and yellow flags on our 17 patrolled beaches.

As you relax, unwind and don your cozzies… we’re donning our blue and white uniform and wide-brimmed hats on Mondays to Saturdays. On Sundays and public holidays, we’re joined by the dedicated Surf Life Saving volunteers in their easily recognised red and yellow uniforms.

When you spend time with your friends, family and loved ones… we’re keeping our eyes on the ocean in case you or someone you know gets into trouble.

It’s a message you will have heard many times before, but that doesn’t make it any less important. When you head to the beach, look for the red and yellow flags. Red and yellow flags tell you that lifeguards or lifesavers are on duty. If you can’t see these flags, please don’t go in the water – even at beaches that are normally patrolled.

No flags = no swim!

It’s a simple message, but history has taught us that too many people get it wrong. Our Christmas wish is that you don’t have to experience what happens when you make that mistake.

These holidays as you enjoy the City of Wollongong’s beaches, remind yourself and your loved ones to swim between the flags at patrolled beaches.

Have a wonderful summer. We’ll see you at the beach.

Sincerely,

Wollongong City Council Lifeguards
