Miles CBD beautification gains state recognition

Western Downs Regional Council

Miles CBD Streetscape

The revitalisation of the Miles CBD Streetscape has been recognised for excellence at the recent Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Queensland Awards.

The project received the Regional Achievement Award, which recognises projects that have made a significant difference to improving the healthy communities and built or natural environments of regional areas.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Planning, Environment, and Agribusiness Councillor Andrew Smith said the award demonstrated the project’s success in capturing what it meant to be a part of the Western Downs story.

“This project was ultimately about generating economic activity and boosting community pride in the beautiful town of Miles by delivering a major enhancement of the main streetscape,” Cr Smith said.

“What made this project extra special was the way it celebrates the story of Miles, and the extensive community consultation which was undertaken to ensure the project recognised the people, places, and stories that make the town so unique.

“By working alongside the community, Council was able to develop a fantastic design based on the stories about Miles and its significance to the Western Downs, and Queensland.

“This award is fabulous recognition for a project designed to create lasting benefits to Miles and helps to put our region on the map for its contributions to modern landscape architecture.”

Specialist design consultants VEE Design, Fourfold Studio, HIGS, and SMEC delivered the design phase of the project on behalf of Council.

The upgrade has delivered several improvements to the strip including a village feel which is RV friendly with feature lighting, colourful landscaping, street tables and stools, outdoor dining opportunities, public art, and improved pedestrian linkages.

The street also features an interactive ‘sound trail’ which tells the story of people, places, and industries in Miles and encourages people to follow the trail and explore the town by foot.

The Miles CBD Streetscape revitalisation was delivered in partnership with the Australian Government’s Local Roads Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.
