A newly established brains trust will work on strategies to promote the economic development and growth of the Northern Territory’s creative industries.
The inaugural Ministerial Creative Industries Advisory Council met for the first time last week.
For an initial two-year term, CIAC members will bring together their creative industries and commercially-focussed experience and expertise to provide strategic advice and feedback to the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Chansey Paech.
The CIAC will build entrepreneurial partnerships with business, community and non-NT companies and advance the Northern Territory creative industries locally and nationally.
Members are:
– Mr Mark Smith – Executive Director Music NT (Darwin), representing the music sector;
– Mr Ben Graetz – Founder BRG Productions and Co-Chief Executive Officer Party Passport (Darwin), representing the performing arts sector;
– Mr Phillip Watkins – Chief Executive Officer Desart (Alice Springs), representing visual arts and crafts and Aboriginal remote arts centres;
– Dr Judith Lovell – Senior Research Fellow Northern Institute, Charles Darwin University (Alice Springs), representing literature sector;
– Ms Elena Madden – Managing Director True North Strategic Communication (Darwin), representing the NT business sector;
– Ms Shelagh Magadza – Executive Director Chamber of Arts and Culture (Perth WA), representing creative industries outside the NT; and
– Ms Helene George Chief Executive Officer Creative Economy (Darwin), representing creative industries outside and including the NT.
Members are tasked to lead professional development networks and partnerships with business, community, and non-NT companies to establish sustainable, commercial benefits for the NT creative industries across local, national and international platforms.
A key action of the Northern Territory Government’s Creative Industries Strategy 2020 – 2024 here – the Territory’s first industry and government co-led strategy – is to develop a model, business plan and resources to establish an independent creative industries representation group. The establishment of the CIAC is the next step in supporting industry towards delivering this action.
