Moama Local Major Rainfall and Runoff Study community consultation

Murray River Council has received financial support from the State Floodplain Management Program, managed by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water (DCCEEW), to undertake an investigation of local rainfall and runoff in and around Moama.

The study will develop a rainfall-runoff model to better understand areas at risk in major storm events, such as the January 2024 storm event.

Big storms with intense rainfall can cause issues in Moama as runoff makes its way to the Murray River. This runoff is also called ‘Major Overland Flow’ and is another type of flood risk that Council is responsible for managing in Moama (in addition to riverine flood risk from the Murray River).

The Study is currently in the Data Collection and Review Stage. Council’s consultant, WMS Engineering will gather and review all available information and past reports, including local knowledge and the community’s experiences of local overland flooding, particularly areas prone to pondage and drainage issues.

Residents have two opportunities to have their say on major storm events in Moama:

  1. Fill in a questionnaire about your experience(s) of inundation, ponding, and drainage issues for the region following major storm events. The questionnaire can be filled in through https://arcg.is/04favf0. Hardcopies are available at Murray River Council, Customer Service Centre, 52 Perricoota Road, Moama.
  2. Attend the community information drop-in session to be held by Council in conjunction with WMS Engineering on Wednesday, 28th August 2024, between 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at the Moama Bowling Club (‘The Venue’ room). Community members are encouraged to bring along their photos of inundation, ponding, and drainage issues to share. Photos can be on your phone, on a USB or memory card. Community members who have an interest in the study, or who have knowledge of past problems around Moama are highly encouraged to attend.
