Around 1,000 additional bus and tram services will be put on over Mad March to help get people get into and around the CBD during the festive period.
Bus frequency on the O-Bahn will almost double from 7pm to 12:30am on Friday and Saturday nights, while tram service frequency will almost double from 6:30pm until last service.
This will increase frequency of trams and provide an additional loop service to the east end of the CBD during the Adelaide Fringe, Superloop Adelaide 500, WOMADelaide, Adelaide Festival and the Adelaide Cup long weekend.
“We know that especially on Friday and Saturday nights people flock to the city to enjoy everything Mad March has to offer,” said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll.
“There’s high demand for transport services throughout this period so we are putting on more bus and tram services.
“There will be around 1,000 additional O-Bahn bus and tram services to get people in and around the city, as well as home safely.
“By increasing bus and tram frequency, we are encouraging more people to leave the car at home to ease congestion, catch public transport into and around our city and enjoy the festivities.”
The State Government has also announced a raft of measures to reduce traffic delays caused by road closures for the Superloop Adelaide 500.
“We understand there will always be a certain level of disruption on our roads around the Superloop Adelaide 500 event which is unavoidable,” said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll.
“However, we are learning from previous years’ experience and implementing a host of measures to help reduce traffic delays as much as possible.
“We will be banning all non-urgent roadworks in the area, increasing green light times for travel into the city and prioritising public transport.
“The Traffic Management Centre (TMC) will also deploy mobile traffic cameras to provide more real time monitoring of traffic so they can make adjustments to traffic sequences to improve traffic flow.”
To minimise traffic delays around the racetrack and CBD, the TMC is;
- Banning all roadworks other than urgent works;
- Skipping green lights for minor roads;
- Increasing green lights at intersections for travel to the city;
- Prioritising public transport;
- Stationing police and Adelaide Metro staff in the TMC;
- Monitoring affected routes from the road;
- Deploying mobile traffic cameras;
- Additional travel time trailer on Greenhill Road;
- Extension to clearway times; and,
- Providing advanced warning of traffic delays via the free Addinsight app, Traffic SA website and travel time signs.
In addition, Adelaide Metro has asked all bus drivers to report any traffic issues – including illegally parked cars, major delays and bottlenecks – to the TMC so changes to traffic lights can be made in real time and reports made to SAPOL.
The first road closures for this year’s event will commence on Harvey Street on Thursday, 13 February, from 6am, with the first major road closures (including Dequetteville Terrace, Wakefield Road and East Terrace) in place on Saturday, 15 February, from 6am.
