More CBD parking on way

Koroit Street is set to gain more car parking spaces through a capital works projects scheduled to start on November 17.

The relocation of the bus stop to Lava Street created an opportunity to add a variety of parking options on the spaces previously occupied by the bus interchange in Koroit Street.

The project will include six regular car parking spaces, two short-term free parking spaces and an accessible parking space long enough to suit specialised rear loading vehicles.

The $20,000 project gives motorists coming to the city centre more parking choices and aligns with community feedback about the former bus interchange which favoured the spaces becoming a mix of general and accessible car parking.

Chief Executive Officer Peter Schneider said the work would involve the removal of a section of kerb on the north side of the street, with this demolition component of the work to be done on a Sunday to minimise disruption to nearby traders.

“We estimate the work will take about a week, weather permitting,” Mr Schneider said.

“The footpaths will remain open at all times and there will be no disruption for passing traffic.

“We’re always appreciative of people’s patience as we go about improving the city centre.”
