More homes for North-West

Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction

The Rockliff Liberal Government is taking more action to end homelessness and provide more support for young people.

A 23-unit youth crisis and transitional accommodation facility has opened in Burnie featuring eight one-bedroom crisis accommodation units, with a laundry, kitchen, recreation and outdoor areas, as well as exercise facilities and a staff residence unit.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street said this new $8 million facility represents more support for independence and stability.

“Homelessness doesn’t discriminate by age and young people can be particularly vulnerable during their transition to adulthood,” Minister Street said.

“Young people are a priority focus in the 20-year Tasmanian Housing Strategy and this facility offers an integrated learning and accommodation setting that will provide extensive support to residents including connecting them to education and employment services.

“This new purpose-built facility assists young people aged 13 to 20 years and will be managed by Youth, Family and Community Connections, an experienced youth service provider across the North and North-West.

“It replaces an outdated eight-unit building and transitional units dispersed in the community, improving service delivery and capacity and is well-located in terms of transport and access to amenities and support services.”

Minister Street said the housing needs of young people are being addressed through a range of actions including:

  1. The next milestone in the Rockliff Liberal Government’s housing plan to deliver 2,000 social homes by 2027;
  2. Developing housing support plans for key client groups such as young people;
  3. New housing models to improve the supply of affordable rentals in the private market;
  4. Backyard units; and
  5. Providing pathways for young people interested in education and training in the building and construction industry.

“We are continuing to invest over $38 million a year on specialist homelessness services to ensure those who need help now are getting the services they need,” he said.

“This includes crisis and transitional accommodation now, dedicated to supporting young people.”
