More local connections for Bunbury Outer Ring Road

  • Bunbury Outer Ring Road to include full connection at South Western Highway
  • Amended interchange design further enhances access options for Bunbury CBD and local destinations within Greater Bunbury
  • Improves access for tourists visiting Ferguson Valley
  • A new design for the future Bunbury Outer Ring Road (BORR) intersection with South Western Highway has been approved to ensure optimal access into Bunbury CBD.

Following extensive stakeholder consultation, the future BORR will now include a full connection with South Western Highway east of Picton.

Previously, the project proposed a partial interchange at South Western Highway, only allowing cars travelling north on BORR to access the highway eastbound and cars heading west on the highway to join BORR to travel south.

The revised concept design includes additional ramps to allow traffic to make all movements between the two roads. Extensive traffic modelling has been undertaken to ensure the road network can continue to operate efficiently once planned developments for Wanju and Waterloo come to fruition.

The updated interchange design will further improve access to destinations within the Greater Bunbury area, including Bunbury CBD and Ferguson Valley, a developing tourist hotspot.

The revised concept design also includes realigning Waterloo Road to amend its current connection with South Western Highway.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“Bunbury Outer Ring Road is one of the most significant projects undertaken in the South West in recent history and it is important the decisions we make are right for the whole community.

“The amended interchange reflects the ongoing discussions with local residents and stakeholders, while taking account of future planned development.

“The local Member for Bunbury Don Punch has consistently listened to community, Council and local stakeholders to improve the final design of the project, which now includes better signage for Bunbury and better access via South Western Highway.”

As stated by Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray:

“The redesigned interchange provides an improved level of access to BORR for community and businesses such as those in the Picton East industrial area.

“Part of the new concept also realigns Waterloo Road to eliminate the existing T-intersection, which has historically experienced a number of serious crashes.”

As stated by Bunbury MLA Don Punch:

“This design change is a great outcome and demonstrates the State Government is listening to the community and using their feedback to improve the project’s development.

“An additional entry point to Bunbury from the Outer Ring Road will increase the access options for visitors as well as improving convenience for locals in the greater Bunbury area.

“This design improvement clearly demonstrates the State Government is building a true ring road, not a bypass, with multiple, functional entry points leading to the heart of Bunbury that enhance ease of access to our city.

“This change is a clear win-win as it improves road safety while improving access.”
