Townsville’s northern suburb residents can now wait for their bus in comfort as construction has wrapped up on 21 new bus stops.
Townsville City Council has worked with Translink to install the new infrastructure at routes along Burdell, Bohle Plain, Shaw and Mount Louisa following $1.45 million in funding from the Queensland Government.
Routes 211, 212 and 232 started in June last year adding 372 new weekly trips to the timetable. The expansion is part of the Queensland Government’s $27.2 million investment in expanding bus services in growth areas across the state.
Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said it is important people using public transport had good facilities.
“We know the weather in Townsville can be extreme at times so this work is very important for the community and public transport users,” he said.
Council has been working to install infrastructure, tactile ground surface indicators, seating and shade at some of the locations.
A Council spokesperson said the extra routes helped with achieving Council’s goal to make the city more connected.
“Townsville’s northern suburbs are one of the fastest growing in the city and the extra bus routes have helped to further connect areas like Burdell, Bohle Plains, Shaw and Mount Louisa with the rest of the Townsville,” they said.
“Council has spent the last few months installing infrastructure at each of the 21 new bus stops.
“At some of the more popular stops we have installed seating and shade to make it more comfortable for people to wait for a bus.
“Each of the stops are accessible and are designed to make it as easy as possible for anyone in the community to take public transport in Townsville’s northern suburbs.”
