More Queenslanders encouraged to take on fostering

Minister for Children and Youth Justice and Minister for Multicultural Affairs The Honourable Leanne Linard

The Palaszczuk Government is asking Queenslanders to consider becoming foster carers and help care for the state’s most vulnerable children.

Earlier this week, TV advertisements where carers tell their stories went to air across the State.

Minister for Children Leanne Linard said the campaign showcases carers from different walks of life, including people who are single, married or in de-facto relationships, and with or without their own biological children.

“I am so proud of the work of our foster and kinship carers. Our response to children in need simply would not be possible without them,” she said.

“That’s why in the 2021-22 Budget we have invested over $300 million to support foster and kinship care services, intensive foster care services and provide carer allowances.”

Foster carers Sandra and Rick from Jimboomba feature in the campaign and said after 15 years of marriage and with two beautiful children of their own, they decided to find out about becoming foster carers.

“Just the knowledge of there being kids out there who need a home and stability and love was the drawcard for me,” Sandra said. Having grown up with a foster sibling, Sandra was familiar with the idea of a non-traditional family structure, so it felt natural for her to step into the role of second-generation foster carer.

Ms Linard said Queensland needs more people like Sandra and Rick to become carers and the campaign is an opportunity to reach out to those considering it.

“Because of the COVID-19 pandemic there has been an increased need for foster carers, and I’m pleased that Queenslanders are meeting this need,” she said.

“Last financial year we saw 1,641 families stepping up to care for the first time as foster or kinship carers.

“While we are very fortunate to already have thousands of caring Queenslanders who foster, more are needed as the number of children requiring out-of-home care increases.” To speak to someone about foster care, call Queensland Foster and Kinship Care on 1300 550 877 or visit www.qld.gov.au/fostercare where you can view foster carer stories, learn more about foster caring and submit an expression of interest.
