More than 60 arrested during operation targeting shoplifting and anti-social behaviour in Parramatta

More than 60 people have been arrested following a high-visibility blitz on public transport in Parramatta.

Operation Matisse is a high-visibility operation being conducted by officers from the Police Transport Command North West sector on Thursday (21 December) and Friday (22 December 2023), targeting anti-social behaviour and shoplifting offences in the Parramatta CBD area.

During the course of the operation, 66 people were arrested and charged with 80 offences including:

  • Larceny
  • Goods in custody
  • Breach of bail
  • Offensive language
  • Assault
  • Robbery
  • Malicious damage
  • Assault police

Officers also issued 13 youth cautions as part of the operation.

Commander of Police Transport Command North West, Detective Superintendent Andrew Evans, said police will continue to target high-transit areas during the holiday period.

“Police will be out in force patrolling shopping centres in the area to help prevent theft and other related offences during, and following, the holiday season,” Det Supt Evans said.

“Thieves may have a false sense of security given the increase in traffic through stores during the busy Christmas period, but an increase in security and improved surveillance technology is proving that offenders are easily caught.”
