Visitors to Wilsons Promontory National Park will have more options for staying longer with tenders being sought to build new accommodation for the park.
This expansion is part of the Andrews Labor Government’s $23 million Wilsons Promontory Revitalisation project, building new and accessible roofed accommodation to support the high demand for overnight stays at the iconic national park.
Wilsons Promontory plays a critical role in conservation and will soon be Australia’s largest, best-protected nature haven, allowing native species like Southern Brown Bandicoot and Long-nosed Potoroo to live without the threat of predators. The national park’s unique coastal landscape and biodiversity is a drawcard for nature tourism.
A ballot system is currently used during peak periods with near 100 per cent occupancy rates recorded. This summer, about 140,000 people stayed at the Tidal River campground.
Two new units are planned alongside the existing huts at Tidal River, providing more options for families and groups. Some of the ageing Wilderness Retreats in the same area will also be replaced.
At the northern end of the national park, new studio-style units are planned. Located just outside the park boundary, the units will offer a base for visitors to explore the tracks and trails through the remote north-eastern sections.
The Wilsons Promontory Revitalisation project includes improved visitor experiences with more accommodation options, new walks, a revamped visitor precinct at Tidal River, and other upgrades.
The revitalisation is expected to directly generate 54 jobs and add approximately $11.22 million to the regional economy.
