Mornington Peninsula Shire is working with state government emergency agencies to support the evacuation from Mallacoota taking place on Friday 3 January 2020.
Approximately 900 evacuees will be arriving at Hastings on two Navy ships on Saturday 4 January 2020.
The Shire will support the arrival of evacuees and assist state government agencies with the transport of families, individuals and pets to Somerville and Melbourne.
An Emergency Relief Centre will be established at Somerville Recreation Centre.
To assist with the evacuation effort, residents are advised to
- Observe changes to traffic management around Hastings, Somerville and surrounds
- Avoid the areas around Blue Scope Steel, Hastings and the Emergency Relief Centre (Somerville Recreation Centre)
- Provide support by making a financial donation to the charities listed below – goods are unable to be received at this stage.
Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Sam Hearn has offered his support for those who have been displaced by the bushfires in Mallacoota and East Gippsland, Victoria.
“Mornington Peninsula Shire Council is deeply concerned for the wellbeing of those affected by bushfires in East Gippsland leading to the evacuation from Mallacoota,” he said.
“We are working closely with state government emergency agencies to prepare for the arrival of HMAS Choules and MV Sycamore and the safe transition of the affected people.”
“Mornington Peninsula Shire residents who would like to support Victorians affected by the bushfire emergency are encouraged to make financial donations to Red Cross Australia, The Salvation Army or Foodbank Victoria.”
“Red Cross has advised they are unable to receive donated goods.”
