Mornington Peninsula Shire supports NAIDOC Week 2019

3 July 2019

Mornington Peninsula Shire will again showcase the work of Aboriginal artists during the annual NAIDOC week exhibition at the Shire offices in Hastings.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week 2019 will celebrate the Indigenous voice of this country that is over 65,000 years old with the theme ‘Voice. Treaty. Truth’.

Indigenous languages have passed down lore, culture and knowledge for over millennia, enriching our nation.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill said “we value the contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities make in Australia, and look forward to NAIDOC Week each year as a time to celebrate the rich and diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Cultures.

“We’re proud to be celebrating the NAIDOC Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Exhibition again this year, an excellent opportunity for any local Aboriginal and Torres Strait artists to showcase their work in a prominent place, at no cost. Artworks will also be available for sale to the public.”

Council’s representative for the Inter Council Aboriginal Consultative Committee and Briars Ward Councillor Sam Hearn said “this significant week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community”.

The NAIDOC Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Exhibition will be officially launched at Hastings Shire Office, at 2pm on Monday 8 July 2019 and open to the public from 9am – 4.30pm until Friday 12 July 2019.
