Most homes completed in quarter in nearly 30 years

Guy Barnett,Minister for State Development, Construction and Housing

One of the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s highest priorities is getting more Tasmanians and Tasmanian families into homes.

New ABS figures reveal that the number of homes completed in the December 2021 quarter reached 999 in seasonally adjusted terms, the highest number in almost 30 years.

The number of completions grew 31 per cent in the quarter, which was the highest growth rate in the country, and throughout 2021, there were 3,234 homes completed.

The December 2021 quarter was also the third in a row since the series began in which the number of homes under construction exceeded 3000.

These results demonstrate that our building sector is building more homes at rates not seen in nearly 30 years, and with dwelling approvals running at very high levels, this trend is expected to continue.

At the same time, as a Government we are working to deliver our unprecedented $1.5 billion housing package that will deliver 10,000 new social and affordable homes by 2032 to support all Tasmanians with housing.

Our economy is nation-leading on many indicators, and we are getting on with the job of building more homes for Tasmanians as we work to secure our future.
