Australian seafood has scored another win as southern rock lobster exports expand into South Korea.
Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud said this expansion will be very valuable for Australian rock lobster producers.
“Australian seafood is some of the best in the world, so it is exciting to see it expand to new markets,” Minister Littleproud said.
“South Korea is a promising and growing market for Australian seafood.
“Our producers are able to meet South Korea’s demand for premium and sustainably caught seafood.”
Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries Jonno Duniam said the trade expansion will provide more opportunities for Australian seafood producers.
“This new market access will allow live, frozen and chilled southern rock lobster to be exported for consumption,” Assistant Minister Duniam said.
“Improving market access for our seafood exporters is a priority for our government.
“That is why we have invested in supporting the industry through the Agribusiness Expansion Initiative and the Agricultural Trade and Market Access Cooperation programs.
“This includes investment in the short-term placement of an additional Australian agricultural counsellor in Seoul to support seafood exports to South Korea.”
- In 2021 Australian seafood exports to South Korea were valued at $12 million, double the value exported in 2020.
- The Australian Government has invested $85.9 million through the Agribusiness Expansion Initiative (ABEI) to grow and diversify agricultural exports.
- Under ABEI, Seafood Industry Australia has been awarded an Agricultural Trade and Market Access Cooperation (ATMAC) grant of $888,000 to support market expansion.
