Mount Louisa Burn To Reduce Natural Hazard

A hazard reduction burn at Mount Louisa is scheduled for next Tuesday, reducing the build up of vegetation growth following heavy rainfall earlier this year.

The purpose of this burn is to reduce the build-up of vegetation growth following the wet season, lowering fuel loads, and reducing bushfire risk around Mount Louisa.

Mount Louisa walking tracks will be closed on 21 July 21 and 22 July to ensure the safety of members of the public that use this space.

Mayor Nick Dametto said the recent uncontrolled bushfire on Castle Hill was a stark reminder of the importance of preventative management.

“Bushfires can and do happen around Townsville, which is why it’s vital Council and our partners at the Rural Fire Service and State Government conduct hazard reduction burns,” Cr Dametto said.

“By undertaking these works we are reducing the risk of uncontrolled fires occurring in the Townsville region.

“This burn will cover roughly 25 hectares on the southern side of Mount Louisa above Zoe Court, Strathburn Street and Adrian Rise and is expected to take up to two days, including follow-up checks.

“Anyone who lives in the area and has medical conditions that can be made worse by the presence of smoke should keep their windows and doors closed during the burn.”

Cr Dametto reminded residents it was also essential for them to be as prepared as possible.

“Every household in Townsville needs to have a plan and know what to do if a bushfire starts near their home,” he said.

“If you don’t have a Bushfire Survival Plan yet, now’s the time to make one and make sure everyone who lives with you knows what that plan is.”
