Utilities are essential services such as water, power, oil and telecommunications. Most road projects require temporary or permanent relocation of utilities. Relocation requires the coordination of
- utility companies
- Local Government
- the Road Management Authority (Department of Transport)
- us and the contractor.
If it’s not done right, it’s costly and causes impacts to road users and the local community.
Moving utility services
Utility services are located above and below ground. Many of these services run either along or across roads, providing essential services to thousands of homes and businesses in the area. Moving these services is a complex process and involves careful planning and working in partnership with service providers, whose availability can be impacted by unplanned events such as storms, fires and floods.
On the Narre Warren North Road Upgrade, we’re working with Ausnet, APA, South East Water, Telstra, Optus and the NBN to ensure this work is completed with minimal impact to services and the community. Throughout the project, we are relocating 610 metres of water mains, 190 metres of electricity, 322 metres of telecommunications and 42 metres of gas. You may not always see these works happening, as much of it will take place underground, behind traffic barriers or at night to minimise impacts on traffic and ensure the safety of our workers, motorists, and the community.
What to expect
To keep traffic flowing on Narre Warren North Road, we’ll mostly work out of peak hours when there are fewer vehicles on the road. While we work, we’ll use a range of measures to keep you and our workers safe, including:
- safety barriers, fencing and road signs to guide road users through changed traffic conditions
- temporarily closing lanes, roads and footpaths and detouring motorists, cyclists and pedestrians
- reducing speed limits.
Where possible we suggest you plan your journey in advance and allow extra travel time. Or if possible, seek an alternative route.
