  • Multicultural Queensland Month kicks off today (1 August) with events and activities across the State
  • The month-long opportunity calls Queenslanders to join together to celebrate our diversity and consider how we can put inclusion into action
  • The month also celebrates the skills and contributions of migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, Australian South Sea Islanders and international students

Queenslanders everywhere are being encouraged to get involved in the state’s largest annual multicultural celebration.

Multicultural Queensland Month kicks off today and will run for the length of August, with a range of cultural events and celebrations across the state.

The range of events and activities planned call upon Queenslanders to join together to celebrate the state’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity.

With more than one in five Queenslanders born overseas, and many having at least one parent born in a country other than Australia, Multicultural Queensland Month is a great opportunity for all communities to showcase their unique cultural heritage.

Queenslanders are encouraged to visit the Multicultural Queensland Month website to see how they could get involved in the community celebrations.

The Multicultural Queensland Awards will also be held in August and will recognise the outstanding efforts and achievements of Queenslanders who support and promote a united, harmonious, and inclusive Queensland.

Quotes attributable to the Minister for Multicultural Affairs Leanne Linard:

“This month is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge Queensland’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity.

“Our diversity makes us stronger, and all of us have an active role in ensuring Queensland continues to be a welcoming and inclusive community for everyone, no matter their background, so our theme this year is ‘putting inclusion into action’ and we will be exploring some of the practical ways we can achieve that.

“This month, I ask all Queenslanders to think about how we can improve inclusion in our workplaces, schools and clubs, or how we might ensure Queenslanders from all backgrounds can easily access the services and information they need to live safe and happy lives.

“What can each of us do to break down barriers and encourage everyone to get involved and connected with their communities?

“When we all connect and contribute, we all help strengthen our local communities and our State.

“One of the highlights of the month is the Multicultural Queensland Awards which recognise those incredible Queenslanders who go above and beyond to foster inclusion and promote diversity.

“I am looking forward to announcing the winners and sharing their inspiring stories. I’m sure their journeys will inspire us all to work together to build an even more inclusive Queensland.

“I encourage Queenslanders celebrating this month to please share your stories, your events and experiences, and let’s have a wonderful month together.”
