Mutawintji – Place of grass and water holes

During the International Year of Indigenous Languages we are highlighting an ABC initiative that looks at the meaning behind place names.

The latest ABC ‘This Place’ video features Mutawintji, in far west New South Wales, which was a traditional gathering place for tribal groups from across Australia.

Malyangappa man and ranger Michael ‘Smacka’ Whyman walks us through this sacred place where ceremonies and initiations were held.

From the name of a street, town or suburb or a landmark, river or mountain – place names are a starting point for sharing Australia’s ancient history and cultures.
