Myki fare rise will make cost-of-living worse for already struggling Victorians

Australian Greens

The Victorian Greens have said the Victorian Labor Government’s decision to raise Myki fares above inflation will make the cost-of-living crisis worse for already struggling Victorians.

The Greens say the Government should be looking at options to make climate-friendly transport more affordable, and even free for younger commuters.

As stated by Victorian Greens economic justice spokesperson, Sam Hibbins MP:

“Urban transport fares is a measure used by the ABS to calculate the inflation rate.

“By raising Myki fares above inflation, the Victorian Labor Government is actually making it worse.

“Governments should be lowering public transport fares for everyone, not stinging people who are already feeling the pinch.”

As stated by Victorian Greens transport spokesperson, Katherine Copsey MLC:

“The Victorian Labor Government has no justification for the huge rise in Myki fares.

“Governments around the world are lowering fares with ‘Climate Tickets’ to lower the cost-of-living and make climate friendly transport more affordable.

“Young people in particular who are struggling with the cost-of-living should have access to free public transport.”
