South Australian residents have the opportunity to come up with a fitting name for the new public high school that will open in Rostrevor in 2023.
The government is today calling for public nominations to name the school which will cater to 1200 students from year 7 to 12.
With the Rostrevor name already claimed by a nearby non-government school, the hunt is on for an original name that reflects the character of the community and local environment.
Acting Minister for Education Rob Lucas said the new name will ideally resonate with the local families whose children will attend the school.
“It’s a great opportunity for the public to have a say in naming a facility that will cater to growing demand in the eastern suburbs,” said Minister Lucas.
“Without the new school at Rostrevor enrolment demand would rapidly outstrip capacity at local public high schools.”
“The new school will be a fantastic facility for local families, providing high quality education in a contemporary learning environment for many years to come.”
Modelling by the Education Department shows that without the new facility secondary schools in the eastern suburbs would reach 105% capacity by 2023, climbing to 132% capacity in 2036.
Education Department Chief Operating Officer Ben Temperly said participants are being challenged to be creative and come up with something better than the all too predictable Schooly McSchoolface.
“Be original, be locally relevant and be aware that someone in the office already submitted Schooly McSchoolface so that’s already on the longlist,” said Mr Temperly.
Nominations are open from Thursday 5 August to Thursday 19 August and can be submitted via www.education.sa.gov.au/NewRostrevorSchool
The final name will be chosen from the shortlist in consultation with local school governing council chairs.
The new school will be built on the site of the soon-to-be vacated Norwood Morialta High School Middle Campus and will be ready to accept year 7 enrolments in 2023, with a wider intake scheduled from 2024.
A school zone and enrolment process will be announced prior to May 2022.
$84.4 million will be invested in the new high school in Rostrevor to completely remove the site’s ageing buildings and replace them with contemporary learning facilities. The existing oval and soccer pitch will be retained.
