Nation leading growth in Tasmanian building and construction sector continues

Elise Archer,Minister for Building and Construction

Growth in Tasmania’s building industry continues to outperform the nation, with Tasmania leading all states on all indicators, according to today’s ABS release of Building Activity data for the March 2019 quarter.

It is great to see that there was total of 2727 new homes built during the year to March 2019, almost 30 per cent higher than the previous year which, once again, was the highest growth rate in the country.

Over the same period, the total value of work done increased by 16.1 per cent, making Tasmania the best performing state.

Importantly, the number of new dwelling commencements in the March 2019 quarter was 8.1 per cent higher compared to the March 2018 quarter, in trend terms, which was the highest growth rate in the country.

This is great news for the building and construction industry, as it shows that there continues to be plenty of work for Tasmania’s tradies.

But importantly, this demonstrates that the Hodgman Liberal Government’s actions to boost the supply of new homes is working.
