National weather forecast: Settled in the east, showers in the west

Hello with your National Weather Forecast, taking a look at conditions for tomorrow, that’s for Thursday the 6th of August. Starting off with a synoptic map, we can see a low pressure system and trough moving away from the country. Those will bring the bulk of showers and cold air away with it, but showers will develop through the day as another trough approaches. Behind that, a ridge of high pressure building across eastern and central parts of the country. That will lead to a mostly settled day but a frosty start all the way up into southern parts of Queensland. Over in Western Australia, showers across the south, moving down towards the coast through the day. That’s ahead of a cold front and trough approaching the south-west. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will build towards the evening and then sweep across the South West Land Division during Friday. A couple of showers also skirting along the eastern Queensland coast, but the rest of Australia is looking mostly dry.

Now a state-by-state look starting off with Queensland, a frosty start inland and patchy fog in the east but otherwise looking like a dry day. We could see a few light showers across exposed coastal areas, making their way up towards the tropical north, but not expecting any significant falls in that. Otherwise, with a bit of high cloud temperatures remaining close to average for this time of year. For Brisbane, partly cloudy top of 24 degrees, dry and sunny up in Cairns with a maximum of 27.

Now to New South Wales, we’ll see some patchy fog and frost through inland areas, and it will be a mostly sunny day to follow along the coast and also in the north of the state. Bit of cloud across southern parts of the state though with some isolated showers across the south-western slopes, but we’re not expecting any alpine snow at all. Otherwise, looking at temperatures close to average for this time of year. Sydney, a sunny day with light winds maximum of 18 degrees, frosty in Canberra to start and then warming up to a partly cloudy top of 14 degrees.

Now to Victoria, we will see patchy fog and frost north of the divide to start with. That will clear to a partly cloudy day, but under cloud we could see a few light showers, mostly about the north-east of the state and then into the evening as that trough approaches. Showers building across the west and also through the south-west, but generally looking at falls of less than about 2 mm or so. Otherwise temperatures looking cool to mild for this time of year. Melbourne partly cloudy, slight chance of a shower into the evening with a top of 15 degrees. Partly cloudy, but mostly dry up in Mildura with a maximum of 18.

Now to Tasmania, with clear skies overnight we will see patchy fog and also frost that will clear to mostly dry day, but showers will build from the west as that trough approaches, reaching the coast into the afternoon and then moving onto the north coast as we head into the evening. We could see up to 10 mm or so with higher isolated falls around elevated areas, but it will be a mostly dry day along the east coast. So for Hobart, partly cloudy, but we could see a slight chance of a light shower into the evening, top of 15 degrees and 14s across the board for northern parts of Tasmania.

Now across to South Australia, we will see some patchy fog along the coast in the morning, then showers will move from the Eyre Peninsula and down towards the south-east of the state through the day. we could see up to about 5 mm or so, but then mostly clear away into the evening. Temperatures will be a little bit cooler though with behind that trough they’ll swing around to a bit more colder south-westerly. So, Adelaide 17 degrees, slight chance of a shower or two, but it will be mostly dry in the north of the state, reaching up into the mid 20s.

Now to Western Australia, you will see some showers across the Goldfields, then move down towards the Esperance coast through the day. Quite patchy totals overall, but we could see up to about 10 mm through some areas and then into the afternoon showers build across the south-west capes, ahead of that trough and cold front we will see those showers building as well as isolated thunderstorms, but they will reach Perth closer towards midnight and more likely into Friday. But we could see some moderate falls along parts of the Albany coast. Further north, it is remaining cloudy across north-western parts of the state. Patchy showers are possible across parts of the Gascoyne. Otherwise, with those north-easterly winds, temperatures will be on the milder side, so, Perth possible light shower, top of 20 degrees, otherwise reaching the high 20s to low 30s across the Pilbara.

Finally, across northern Australia, not much change compared to the last few days. Could see a few very light showers touching across the Tiwi Islands. Otherwise, will be dry east to south-easterly winds. We are looking at a sunny day, but with high fire danger across parts of the Darwin area. So 32 degrees in Darwin, sunny conditions. Reaching the low 30s across into the Kimberley.
