Into the afternoon and evening though, those showers expand into much of central and northern Queensland, and also up into the Kimberley in Western Australia. Otherwise, towards the east coast, this high pressure system is pushing down warmer northerly winds across the south-east, so we are looking at a much milder day, given how cool it has been so far this week. The rest of Australia is looking mostly dry, but a cold front approaches south-west WA as we head into the evening.
So now a state by state look starting off with Queensland. We will see showers and storms across the west that will expand into central districts through the day. We may also see heavy falls leading to flash flooding, particularly across the west of the state. A couple of showers also moving on to the south-east coast and also through the far northern tropics.
But despite the cloud cover and the storms, it will be a very warm and humid day right across Queensland, and we are still seeing ongoing flooding across southern inland areas. For Brisbane, partly cloudy day. Slight chance of a shower in the morning or afternoon. Going for a partly cloudy top of 26 °C. In Cairns, warm, partly cloudy with a maximum of 31 °C.
Now down to New South Wales. We are expecting to see patchy morning fog and low cloud in the east of the state, but then this high pressure system over the Tasman Sea will result in a mostly sunny day to follow. We’ll see those easterly winds becoming more northerly and temperatures will start to rise, reaching the high 20s to low 30s across much of the state, but otherwise mostly sunny day. Slight chance for showers or a storm across the north-west as we head into the evening. For Sydney, patchy morning fog and mostly sunny day 25 °C to follow.
Patchy morning fog also possible in Canberra, and also going for a maximum of 25 °C.
Now down to Victoria. We will also see patchy morning fog and low cloud in the south of the state. Quite a cool morning for some areas, but the northerly winds will ramp up and temperatures will rise into the low to mid 20s in the south and the high 20s to low 30s across the north, and a mostly sunny day, but cloud will thicken in the west, and we could see the odd shower or two across western districts heading into the afternoon, as well as the evening. For Melbourne, we are looking at a patchy morning fog in the morning, then a mostly sunny day to follow, 26 °C. Warm and 32 °C up in Mildura.
For Tasmania, it will see a patchy morning. Low cloud and fog in the west of the state. Also slight chance of a very light shower early on in the south-west, but then a mostly sunny day to follow and temperatures above average for this time of year, reaching the low to mid 20s for many areas. Hobart, mostly sunny, top of 23 °C and reaching the high teens to low 20s across the north of the state.
Now to South Australia. We are expecting to see widespread showers and storms across the west. They’ll extend into the Eyre Peninsula late in the morning, then, of course, Adelaide and the south-eastern districts in the afternoon as well as into the evening. But towards the evening those showers and storms will start to ease before it gets down towards the far south-east of the state. A warm day, though with very humid conditions, but Adelaide, we are expecting the showers and storms to build from the afternoon and into the evening. Top of 29 °C and reaching the high 20s to low to mid 30s across the rest of South Australia.
Now across to Western Australia. Patchy morning fog through the Wheatbelt. Also a slight chance of a light shower across the Eucla that will move into South Australia through the day, and we are expecting to see a mostly dry and sunny day to follow, but a few showers building across the south-west ahead of that cold front that will bring showers across the Wheatbelt as you head into Saturday. For Perth, we could see some patchy morning fog. Partly cloudy day, 23 °C to follow and remaining quite warm across the Gascoyne and also the Pilbara, reaching the low to mid 30s.
Finally, across northern Australia we’ll see plenty more showers and storms across central Australia, including for Alice Springs, and the showers become more widespread across the rest of the Northern Territory and also into the Kimberley as you head into the afternoon, also showers and storms for the Top End. Mostly across across western parts of that district. For Darwin, we are expecting a possible shower or storm, 34 °C, and showers and storms continue for Alice Springs. A top of 33 °C. That’s your forecast for today.
