A Matthew Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will build a new hospital in Mildura to ensure residents right across the Mallee have access to the healthcare they deserve.
The current facility at the Mildura Base Public Hospital is outdated, and investment is vital to meet the needs of a growing regional population.
A Matthew Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will deliver a new $750 million Mildura Hospital, with an immediate injection of $250 million in our first budget towards getting the project underway.
Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy, said the investment would help fix the healthcare crisis in Victoria.
“The pandemic has laid bare the issues embedded into the healthcare system following years of mismanagement by the Andrews Labor Government,” Mr Guy said.
“Accessing basic healthcare should never be a struggle. This investment is about ensuring regional Victorians are prioritised, and the very best of healthcare is made available.”
Importantly, the hospital will be a venue for research, training, clinical trials and will also help to attract and retain medical staff in Mildura by improving the capacity to train doctors, nurses, and other clinical staff locally.
The new hospital will also have a focus on Indigenous health.
It is anticipated that the new research and academic facilities will be supported by the Commonwealth Government, and La Trobe and Monash Universities.
Shadow Minister for Health, Georgie Crozier, highlighted the importance of making the hospital an educational hub.
“The next generation of nurses from the Mallee can stay close to home while completing their studies, which is also a massive drawcard to the region,” Ms Crozier said.
“Delivering a new hospital in Mildura will ensure regional Victorians are able to access the healthcare they need, when they need it.”
The new hospital will form part of the Victorian Liberals and Nationals’ plan to fix the health crisis, which includes a new Infectious Diseases Response Centre so we can treat the sick without locking up the healthy.
Being a regional city on the border, the new hospital will largely service the immediate Mildura and surrounding communities, as well as towns and regions of New South Wales and South Australia.
Liberal Candidate for Mildura, Paul Matheson, said the funding was a big win for the local community.
